Does anybody here like to look at sites like 4chan and think about the mob/gang mentality and dynamic that exists there?
I think it's a brilliant social experiment if nothing else to see how a group really behaves when given anonymity and left to fester.
Despite how cancerous it all is, i'll always have a part of me that will want to watch the chaos unfold by itself and snowball until it hits something and creates internet disaster.
I reckon it would be incredible to see a real life version of 4chan where raids would be just as easy etc, and have no possible consequences.

It's one of the few places where basically anything is socially acceptable. The only think that keeps /b/ going is the memes. If there was no memes /b/ would die out completely. I think that is one of the aspects that creates a mob mentality. I'd consider raiding, etc a meme.

Maybe it could be seen as a teenage party when parents are out... at least /b/. there are some more serius boards there too.

I think it's like anything else: people gather around, gather information, and try to put it to use in their lives.

Maybe a few. Around 99% of the people that browse 4chan are social rejects with all kinds of mental issues. Most are too lazy to do anything to better themselves. :/

There is /b/ and there is other boards.

/b/ mentality isn't the same to all boards.

I think they take on a particular character, but I don't think that makes them idiots. I think they might be unfamiliar with other types (especially genuine, direct types) of communication.

I've actually been on /b/ for a couple of years now, and yes. There is ALOT of crap that goes flying around, but there are also genuine conversations with useful information there. I have actually learned things from /b/, I have laughed, cried, felt pity and anger. Freedom and anonymity actually do provide a breeding ground for the exchange of information. The problem is that there is a "sweet spot" for size. Too many and the noise drowns out any real conversation. Too few and people feel obligated to post SOMETHING just to keep the board moving (it hasn't been like this for a long time). And yes, there is a mob mentality, but that will exist for ANY group of people simply as a way to identify oneself. If by some happenstance, 3.14 chan grew large enough, I suspect we would see much of the same here.

/b/ is just a place to go to blow off steam, and to be out of character. at least for me

The spilling out into the real world and alerting all the rest of the world, could force some kind of changes to the internet though. Sort of started already, but I'm not sure where its all headed

If the world looked like /b/ it would be a sad place indeed.

Imagine a world where people said the same 3 phrases to you 15 times a day.

Also, I heard u like mudkipz

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number
lifted from an XKCD post i read.
I think it has a bit of truth to it and applies to this topic because /b/ is countless mass of people, a mob of sorts. But for each "epic thread" that gets reduced down to a couple hundred at most posters. I don't know how many viewers.
